There has been something

sitting on the surface

for some time now

and it irks me —

the thing itself

and the murkiness beneath.

I had a lightbulb moment

in which I realized that

the thing is respect —

or rather,

a lack of it.

And now that I know it —

Heaven help the next person

that doesn’t show it.
