Potato’s Passage

1–2 minutes

Potato stared wide-eyed at the little girl with brown curls on the other side of the glass. The clear walls of her cage had initially confused her. She had ran into them repeatedly and each time, wondered why this made the humans outside the glass laugh.

This wasn’t the first time that she had been eyed by a child. In fact, this seemed her reason for existing. But, the twinkle in eyes of this youngster made Potato ponder if things were about to change.

And that they did!

The big burly hands of a mister reached in and swooped her up and out of the empty fish tank. The girl stroked Potato’s forehead and nodded at the red haired man in the affirmative. Potato squirreled her own head up and down in hopes that the lad would pet her again.

Suddenly, Potato’s world went black. What just happened? These walls aren’t glass. I can’t see anything.

Sound emanated from the box in the form of a squeaky guinea pig attempting to secure her footing on the slippery thin cardboard base. She slid back and forth as the little girl, M.J., happily bopped her way out of the store and into the backseat of their red convertible.

Wind whooshed around Potato’s temporary home and seeped in through the cracks. Brrr. What is that noise? Where are we going?

To be continued….

[…] Over time, I will declutter some more, re-decorate and likely, re-paint. And the guinea pig needed to stay for now, but at some point, will pass on to the afterlife. In the meantime, I shall provide it a better life than it has had and perhaps work towards the fate of this guinea pig as the star of a children’s book by K.J. Sculling?!? […]
