Prompt (#22 here)

Food for Thought: Write a scene or story that includes food.

“You don’t get it. I want a pursuit in my life,” Susan said.

Her husband replied, “You have a job.”

“Exactly, I have a job; not a career, let alone a passion,” she retorted.

Their back and forth continued. Him worried about the money should she quit her job to pursue opening a business, and her an underlying yearn for something more in the form of bringing happiness to people through pie making.

“I hate sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day, punching a time clock, and for what, $16 an hour and zero respect? $16 is practically the cost of a latte these days!” Susan cried out as she paced on their backyard red brick patio.

He studied her distress and couldn’t help but find it cute. Deep down, he had wondered how long she’d last in a 9-5 given her talents galore – her ability to bake exquisite absolutely-to-die-for pies being just one of those. And ultimately, he loved that she wanted to share and spread joy instead of exceed daily data entry expectations by a mile.

Susan’s back and forth, and the stressful conversation, had worn both of them out. They took a seat at the round table that sat in the middle of concentric circles of masonry.

She exhaled. He leaned back, looked up and realized that their fate was sealed.

“What do you think we should charge for a latte?” Bill said with a wink and an index finger pointing upward.
